The Office of the Vice President for Research at Temple University is proud to announce the creation of a new Center for Statistical and Information Science (CSIS). The Center will be directed by Dr. Alan J. Izenman, Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics and overseen by an interdisciplinary advisory board. The aim of the Center will be to provide statistical expertise, research collaborations, and education to all programs, departments, schools and colleges of Temple University, including the Medical Campus.
A long-term goal of the Center is to help create a university environment that can be used to build novel and interdisciplinary degree programs, which need statistics as a major tool in the training of students.
Interdisciplinary research cooperation between the Center and departments within the university will take different forms, ranging from the writing of research grants to statistical consulting services to seminars, short courses, workshops, and conferences. The core members of the Center will include statisticians, biostatisticians, and computer scientists housed permanently in academic homes.
The Center will provide a number of special services to the university community. These services include the following:
Other Consulting Services:
For major research projects that require more statistical services than the Center can offer without charge, its staff is available to submit joint collaborative research grant/contract proposals or enter into subcontract agreements. Such agreements might cover any or all of the various statistical/quantitative aspects of the research.

Seminars, Short Courses, Workshops, and Conferences
The Center will provide jointly-sponsored seminars on topics of interest to the Temple University community. The Center will also coordinate short courses on specialized topics of statistical methodology for applied researchers and scientists.
So as not to duplicate the basic statistical services currently being offered by the Institute for Survey Research (ISR), the Social Science Data Library (SSDL), and Computer Services (which offers software training, platform conversions and technical assistance), the Center will exist as a scholarly resource for collaborative research and grant application, and as an advanced statistical consulting service. The ISR and SSDL will be affiliates of the Center.
A Workshop by Dr. J. Douglas Willms on Statistical Modeling including Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM)
We are pleased to announce the following two statistical modeling (including HLM) workshops to be held in Montreal, Quebec, October 23-25, 2006 and Paris, France, May 9-12, 2007. Topics to be covered include: analytic techniques appropriate for analyses of hierarchically structured data, basic introduction to Rasch models and complex survey designs, use of SPSS syntax files to estimate descriptive statistics, and policy implications stemming from a provocative list of questions posed by Dr. Willms. Please take a moment to view the attached flyers; if you are interested in the workshop or have any questions about it, feel free to email Beth Fairbairn (fairbair@unb.ca). As well, you are encouraged to pass along this message to any colleagues you feel may be interested in this training opportunity.
